Papers of Mass. politician Joseph B. Ely, two-term governor from 1931-35, delegate who nominated Alfred E. Smith for president at the Democratic National Convention, opponent of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and candidate for the Democratic nomination for President in 1944. The bulk of the collection is political. The issues and results of the 1930 gubernatorial race, his years as governor, and the development of his political views are documented with clippings, correspondence, press releases, programs, invitations, addresses, and subject files, although the materials are incomplete for most of these topics.
